Baseball Betting Basics
Swing into action by putting these great baseball betting angles into your rotation
Baseball is a great sport to bet because you don't have to deal with those pesky point spreads.
All you have to do is pick the winner of the game. Baseball is a game that comes with a unique
set of betting angles when compared to other sports. A few of the important factors relevant
to baseball wagering are:
- Pitchers - Good pitchers on good teams are winners.
- Winning and losing streaks.
- Umpires - They are all different.
- Game conditions (weather, playing surface, day/night).
Baseball betting can really be divided into unique seasons. There is the April to May season,
the June to July season, and the August to September season.
Early Season Baseball:
In April, underdogs are, for a variety of reasons, the preferred play. Also, pitchers are always
ahead of hitters coming out of spring training. The beautiful thing is that the odds are the same
against underdogs early in the season as later in the season when favorites rule. The key point
to remember is that underdogs should be bet early in the season.
Umpires are always an important factor in baseball games, but they are even more so early in the
season. People are often quick to criticize the hard working arbiters for the decisions they make.
What people don't often realize is just how consistent the umpires are day in and day out. Umpires
have been, and always will be, an extremely important factor when looking at over/under totals.
Umpires with large (usually wide) strike zones are obviously better bets for the under, while umpires
with smaller strike zones are better bets for the over. Imagine a game with a so-so pitcher,
pitching against a good hitting team, with an umpire who has a postage stamp size strike zone working
the plate. Hello over!
It is also wise to pay attention to how pitchers are used early in the season. If a manager had to
use his bullpen to excess the previous night, and a so-so pitcher is on the hill tonight, look for
the over. Conversely, if the bullpen is fresh and the ace is throwing, a low scoring game is likely
in the works. It's really just common sense.
Mid-Season Baseball:
Baseball is much different as spring gives way to summer. There is now an established baseline of
trends and statistics that will help guide you in making good plays. Focus on pitchers that look to
be having breakout years. Also bet on pitchers having good years for good teams. In baseball, good
teams often make good pitchers. As an example, look at Randy Johnson's record for a bad Arizona
team in 2004. His record was very un-Randylike even though his ERA was stellar.
Late Season Baseball:
Baseball is a game about streaks and slumps. In the classic baseball movie, Bull Durham, Crash Davis
refers to "respecting the streak." This is good sports betting advice. When teams are on losing skids,
keep betting against them. Conversely, when they are streaking, keep playing them. In baseball, both
winning and losing are contagious.
