Strategies for Playing Progressive Slot Machines
Playing the slots doesn't take a lot of skill. We assume that you know that the house has a big advantage over the player when it comes to slot machines, and that you play the slots for the pure enjoyment factor. Progressive slot machines are part of a linked group of slot machines. As the individual machines in the network are played, the jackpot grows until some lucky player wins it. After somebody hits a progressive jackpot, the jackpot is set to a base amount and the process begins anew.
Not all progressive slot machines are created equal. There are Stand-Alone Progressives which are just what the name implies. Stand-Alones are not connected to other jackpots in a network. They have much smaller jackpots than the other type of progressive slot machine - the Wide Area Progressives. Wide Area Progressives, or WAPs as they are commonly referred to, are the Big Money jackpots. These machines can yield life changing money to a lucky player. WAPs are easily identified by their large jackpot meters above the row or carousel.
Gamblers who like to hit small jackpots should not play progressive slots. Progressives typically yield much less frequent jackpots than normal slot machines. Progressive slots are better for players who don't mind losing more money in their quest for a really big score.
Progressive play strategy is actually quite simple
The first thing you must do when playing progressive slots is to bet the maximum number of coins or credits on every spin. Betting the maximum is the only hope a player has of beating the progressive system. This should be obvious, but we will say it anyway: You cannot win the progressive jackpot unless you bet the maximum. If you are uncomfortable betting the maximum number of coins or credits then you are probably playing the wrong machine. When gambling, it is very important to match your gambling psyche to the right game.
The other important strategy for playing progressive slot machines is to play the machines with the highest jackpots. It seems pretty obvious doesn't it? The progressive jackpot for a given WAP is displayed over the bank of slots that are tied into that particular jackpot. Some WAPs have a secondary jackpot. That is usually displayed below the mega-jackpot sign.
Remember, when a progressive jackpot is won, the WAP is set to a base amount. If you see a progressive payout set at a low amount - say $150,000 - you will know that this jackpot will likely not be paying again for a long time. You will always be better off playing a progressive jackpot that is at an amount well above the reset level. If you aren't sure of the reset level just ask a casino employee or supervisor.
