The Triple Crown
The Triple Crown Exemplifies the Excitement of Thoroughbred Horse Racing. It Also Makes for Great Betting Opportunities
The Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby is the kickoff race for racing's crown jewel, The Triple Crown. The Derby, or Run for the Roses as it is also called, is run each year on the first Saturday in May at beautiful and historic Churchill Downs, located in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Derby is the most famous horse race in the world, matching three-year old horses at a distance of 1 ¼ mi. The winner of the Kentucky Derby has a chance to win the Triple Crown, one of the most difficult sporting feats. Over the many years that the Kentucky Derby has been run, there have only been 16 that have gone on to win both the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, the other two legs in the elusive Triple Crown.
Kentucky Derby Futures Bets
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, is a bet that allows handicappers the chance to bet on a potential Derby entrant at odds that are likely to be much better that they would receive if they bet into the pari-mutuel pool on race day. Just as is the case with a regular win bet, the Kentucky Derby Future wager is a minimum $2 bet. The winning payout for each pool is based on the odds at the close of betting for that specific pool. Payouts are made when each race is declared "official."
Pool 1 wagers are really intended for those that follow the top two year old horses throughout their rookie year. Pool 2 wagers give a bettor a little bit better feel for how good a horse is because it takes into account the earliest races of the three year old season. Pool 3 wagers close just before the majority of the major Kentucky Derby Prep races are run
2006 Kentucky Derby Prep Races
The Road to the Kentucky Derby begins in January with the more minor prep races and continues into late April. Many horses start their
three-year old season with Kentucky Derby aspirations, but few are able to go the full distance to the Churchill Downs starting gate.
The 2006 Kentucky Derby Prep races are shown in the table below.

2006 Kentucky Derby Analysis and Selections
Get SBA's Exlcusive 2006 Kentucky Derby Analysis - The 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby promises to be one of the best ever! Will 2006 be the year that gives us another Triple Crown winner? Time will tell. One thing is certain: This year's field features several contenders with the potential to go all the way. See how we see this epic race.
The Preakness Stakes
The Preakness Stakes is the second leg of the Triple Crown. The Preakness Stakes is run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby at Pimlico Track, located in Baltimore, Maryland. The Preakness is actually the oldest of the Triple Crown races with the first race having been run in 1873. The winner of the Preakness receives, in addition to a nice purse, the Woodlawn Vase, America's most expensive trophy.
The Preakness is run at a distance of 1 3/16 miles on the Pimlico course. Although some longshots have won the Preakness, the race generally favors shorter priced horses and, in many cases, the Kentucky Derby winner.
Preakness Stakes Analysis and Selections
Congratulations to the 2005 Preakness Stakes winner Afleet Alex. Afleet Alex also ran an excellent race in the Kentucky Derby, just missing winning that race. Afleet Alex went on to capture the Belmont Stakes as well. That an excellent champion like Afleet Alex, who was talented enough to win the Triple Crown, could not get the job done, demonstrates just how difficult it is for a horse to win the Triple Crown. Check back with us when the Preakness Stakes draws near. Sports Betting Acumen will provide free race analysis and our exclusive Preakness selections.
The Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes is the third, and longest, leg of the Triple Crown. The first running of the Belmont Stakes took place at Jerome Park in 1867, before moving to Morris Park in 1890. The race settled in its current home, Belmont Park, in 1905. The Belmont Stakes, with its 1 ½ mile distance, has proved to be an endurance test for its three year old runners. Many horses have had their Triple Crown hopes crushed in the Belmont Stakes
Historically, the Belmont Stakes has been a good betting race with more than its fair share of longshots ending up in the Winner's Circle. Who can forget Birdstone's victory in the 2004 Belmont which crushed the Triple Crown dreams of Smarty Jones?
